Eta Carinae is a massive and luminous binary star system located around 7,500–10,000 light-years away in the Carina Nebula. It features a primary luminous blue variable star and a smaller O-type companion. Known for its dramatic Great Eruption in the 19th century, it ejected massive amounts of material, forming the Homunculus Nebula. Shining over 5 million times brighter than the Sun, Eta Carinae is unstable and expected to end its life as a supernova or hypernova, offering key insights into the evolution of massive stars.
